One dead following crash on 5 Freeway in San Diego

NATIONAL CITY (KUSI) – One person was reported dead Monday after a vehicle went off the San Diego (5) Freeway  in National City and a man from that vehicle ran across freeway lanes, authorities said.

The crash was reported at 9:47 p.m. on the northbound San Diego Freeway at Civic Center/Harbor Drive, the California Highway Patrol said.

Christopher Allan Bingham of Chula Vista was jumping a barrier onto the northbound lanes of I-5 when a 37-year-old woman driving a 2007 Lexus sedan hit him near Civic Center Drive in National City shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday, according to California Highway Patrol and the San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office.

Witnesses reported seeing Bingham exit his Kia sedan while it was traveling at highway speeds on southbound I-5, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office. He then got up, ran toward northbound I-5 travel lanes and was struck by the Lexus sedan as he jumped a barrier south of Plaza Boulevard.

Paramedics were dispatched, but Bingham was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office. Bingham was the only person in the Kia sedan.

The Lexus driver remained on scene and cooperated with officers, California Highway Patrol public-affairs Officer Jake Sanchez said.

The fatality forced a closure of the northbound lanes of the interstate in the area for about two hours. Lanes were reopened at 11:40 p.m., the CHP said.

The northbound 5 Freeway was shut down just south of Civic Center with all traffic diverted off at Harbor Drive and Caltrans was alerted to guardrail damage needing repair.
