One dead in shopping mall shootout

CHULA VISTA (CNS) – Three people attempted to burglarize an Apple Store in Chula Vista Monday, leading to a shootout with a private security guard and a getaway car crash that left one of the burglars dead, police said.

Gunfire at Otay Ranch Town Center, located at Birch Road and Eastlake Parkway, was reported about 6:45 a.m., according to Chula Vista police.

Two men and woman apparently did a “smash and grab,” in which glass doors and windows are broken and merchandise is grabbed quickly, CVPD Capt. Gary Facicci said.

A private armed security guard interrupted the burglars and at some point, gunfire was exchanged with the two male burglars, who were also armed, Facicci said.

The male suspects and their alleged female accomplice then got into a vehicle that crashed while still inside the shopping center's parking lot, Facicci said, noting that one of the men was driving and he died in the crash. He also may have been wounded in the shootout, media reports suggest.

It was not immediately clear what the alleged getaway vehicle crashed into, but no other injuries were immediately reported.

The second male suspect and female were arrested at the scene, Facicci said. Both were described as being in their mid-20s.

Several schools in the area were placed on lockdown during the incident.
