Driver in crash on I-5 in Chula Vista dies in hospital

CHULA VISTA (KUSI) — An 85-year-old San Diego man was fatally injured in a crash on Interstate 5 in Chula Vista, authorities said Tuesday.

The victim’s 2008 Ford Focus was rear-ended by a 2009 Infiniti SUV in the southbound lanes near state Route 54 shortly after 9 p.m. Monday and was pushed into a concrete barrier on the west side of the freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol. It was not immediately clear whether the Ford had been moving when it was hit or had been stopped in the lanes.

The Ford’s driver suffered major head trauma in the crash and died in a hospital about an hour after the accident, authorities said.

The 45-year-old San Diego man behind the wheel of the Infiniti was not hurt, according to the CHP.

The crash prompted the closure of all but one southbound lane, but they were re-opened shortly after midnight.
