One person killed in crash on I-5 in downtown San Diego

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – One person was killed Wednesday in a crash on a rain- soaked stretch of Interstate 5 near Balboa Park.

The traffic fatality occurred shortly after 11 a.m. on the southbound side of the freeway, just west of state Route 163 in the Cortez Hill neighborhood of downtown San Diego, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The victim, whose identity was not immediately available, died at the scene of the accident, which left three lanes blocked and led to heavy congestion in the area, the CHP reported.
