‘Operation Safeguard’ in full effect for holiday weekend
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – It's an unfortunate reality, but every Fourth of July there is an increase in DUI related crashes.
That's why now, "Operation Safeguard" is in full effect.
"The San Diego Police Department along with all of our law enforcement partners will be conducting maximum enforcement targeting drunk drivers during the holiday period," said Chief Shelley Zimmerman of the San Diego Police Department.
But it's just not alcohol related crashes law enforcement is looking out for.
"While rates of driving under the influence of alcohol have have dropped significantly in the last 20 years, the issue of drugged driving is on the rise," said Steve Lykins, the Executive Director of M.A.D.D. San Diego.
In the span of ten years, the number of people killed in drugged driving cases has gone up nearly 40 percent.
The message here from police and deputies is simple: If you're high, it's a DUI.
