Otay Ranch 16, Mt. Miguel 6

The Mount Miguel Matadors hosted the Otay Ranch Mustangs in the “Battle of the Winning Streak.”

The team who overcame this hard fought battle in Week 3 was Otay Ranch. They beat Mt. Miguel Friday night, 16-6.

In the first quarter the Mustangs had a great jump on offense. Dorsey Furlow had an impressive 25 yard run and was not stopping there. He continued to run the ball to the red zone but the Matador defense held Otay Ranch, forcing them to kick a field goal. Score in the first quarter 3-0 Mustangs.

In the second it was three and out for the Matadors offense. QB Jacob Castillo couldn’t connect with any of his receivers giving the Mustangs a majority of the possession. Even though the Matadors offense wasn’t connecting, the defense was certainly on fire. They didn’t stop not one, but two touch down attempts inside the 5. Two more Otay Ranch field goals were put on the board ending the half 9-0 Mustangs.

Mt. Miguel dominated in the third quarter defensively. Matadors had a great play on the ensuing kickoff chasing the ball down to the 3 yard line. Mount Miguel had a fumble recovery early in the third and an interception by Chris Calzadillas that led to a Matador touchdown. Castillo was able to connect with Jay Von Jones for a 16 yard touchdown pass, the extra point was no good, putting the Matadors 3 points behind. The score in the third 9-6.

In the fourth, both teams showed a great running game. Matadors were explosive up the middle and the Mustangs had options with Furlow and Sam Stephens gaining yardage for Otay Ranch. Within the last minutes of the game, it was Stephens who found the end zone with his 33 yard touch down run finalizing the game, 16-6 Mustangs.

Otay Ranch remains undefeated with a 3-0 record, they will face St. Augustine in Week 4. Mt. Miguel, now 2-1, will face Monte Vista.
