Padres opening night re-cap
When the Dodgers and Padres opened up the 2014 Major League Baseball season at Petco Park on ESPN Sunday night, you got the feeling that announcer Dan Shulman and his broadcasting partner and former Padre, John Kruk, never wanted to leave.
“You picked a nice place to play here for a few years, my friend,” said Shulman to Kruk, admiring the Hotel Del Coronado.
“Friday, when I got here, was the first time I've ever been to downtown San Diego,” admitted Kruk. “I had other agendas, Dan, than city life, ya know? I was a beach guy…surfer…”
“It was a great stage, no doubt. I think that as an organization, and even us in uniform, and our city, love to be in the national spotlight,”said eighth season Padres manager Bud Black. “I think that San Diego always represents itself well.”
Assuming the Padres continue to play well, you can bet ESPN will be back.
“It's always pretty cool getting national attention,” said Padres outfielder Chris Denorfia. “As a fan of baseball, that was a great game tonight.”
There was also Catalina, the ball girl, down the right field line – making SportsCenter's Top 10.
Andrew Cashner's 2014 haircut didn't go unnoticed, either.
“Well, I'll tell you what: that's a mullet…” said Kruk. “The shaved sides… the long in the back…”
Concerning his hair, Cashner said, “It's not a hairstyle, it's a lifestyle.”
