Palomar Health closes Escondido hospital emergency room

ESCONDIDO (KUSI) – The stand-by emergency room of Palomar Hospital in Escondido shut down today, according to Palomar Health. It is the next step in the continued closing of the hospital.

Palomar Health opened a new Emergency Department and Trauma Center at a facility a few miles West of Palomar Hospital, but has kept the older facility running over the last three years to handle patients with less-critical needs.

“This transition is a positive milestone as we make progress towards the final closure of the downtown campus,” Frank Beirne, Executive Vice President of Palomar Health said.

Research has been conducted to ensure that the facilities that remain open will provide fully-accessible care for patients, Beirne said.

The older site will continue to offer a birth center, rehabilitation facility and behavioral health services until further notice.
