SDG&E to completely close I-8 freeway from midnight to 6 a.m. for repairs

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – All eastbound and westbound lanes on I-8 between North 2nd Street and Greenfield Drive in El Cajon will be closed Wednesday night from 11:30 until 6 in the morning to allow San Diego Gas and Electric crews to complete power line repairs.

The eastbound 2nd Street on-ramp will also be closed from 11 until 6.  The following detours will be in place:
Westbound I-8: Exit at Greenfield Drive, turn right on Greenfield Drive, left on Main Street, right on Broadway, left on N. 2nd Street to westbound I-8.
Eastbound I-8: Exit at North 2nd Street, turn left on 2nd Street, right on Broadway, left on Main Street, and right on Greenfield Drive to eastbound I-8.
An eastbound truck carrying an oversized load struck the overhead power lines on I-8 at Greenfield Drive shortly before 2 a.m.  The resulting low hanging power lines required high profile vehicles to be diverted off the eastbound freeway lanes at Greenfield Drive and back on at North 2nd Street.
The freeway was closed in both directions between North 2nd Street and Greenfield Drive for initial power line repairs from 8:30 a.m. until just after 10 a.m. and again from 11 a.m. until shortly after noon when all eastbound and one westbound lane were reopened.
High profile vehicles on westbound I-8 were diverted off the freeway at Greenfield Drive and back on at North 2nd Street until 3 p.m. when the second westbound lane could be safely reopened to all traffic.
Final repairs are being postponed until late tonight due to the high volume of Thanksgiving holiday traffic expected to travel through the area.
Holiday travelers are asked to remember basic safety precautions such as checking vehicle fluids and tires, carrying emergency equipment and supplies, avoiding driving while drowsy or otherwise impaired or distracted, and reminding all vehicle occupants to buckle up.
