Passenger killed when car is struck by fire engine in Poway

POWAY (CNS) – A motorist was injured and his passenger killed at a North
County intersection early Thursday when his car was struck broadside by a fire
engine on its way to an emergency with its lights and sirens activated.

The public-safety vehicle struck the Honda at Poway and Midland roads
and pushed it into a roadside light pole about 4 a.m., according sheriff's
officials.

A woman riding in the car died at the scene, Lt. Clayton Lisk said. Her
name was withheld pending family notification.

Medics took the Honda's driver to a hospital for treatment of injuries
of undetermined severity.

No one in the fire engine was hurt, the lieutenant said.

The intersection remained closed for investigations and cleanup into the
late morning, prompting a traffic alert for the heavily traveled area.
