Paul Rudy SD Gulls Chat with Craig Elsten and Melissa Werman
Thursday evening the San Diego Gulls Craig Elsten and Melissa Werman visited the KUSI Studios to promote Saturday Night’s Brain Cancer Awareness Night at the Valley View Casino Center. Inspired by defenseman Joe Piskula, the San Diego Gulls organization, flew Piskula’s youth coach Dom Hilger and his family to San Diego for a special night on ice.
"It’s so exciting to see how our hockey community is rallying to help Dom after Joe put the story out there," says Elsten. The Gulls radio voice explaining how Piskula wanted to help his former coach after learning of Hilger’s brain cancer diagnosis. "Once he started the gofundme page, it started filling up immediately," said Elsten.
Proceeds from the fundraiser are not only helping the Gulls fly Hilger’s entire family from Wisconsin to spend some time in sunny San Diego, capped by a chance to watch his former athlete play in person. The Gulls are also raising money for local charities. "Proceeds with go to Hockey4Hope and the University Madison Wisconsin Neurology department," said Werman. "You can find even more details at our website, www.sandiegogulls.com."
Tickets for Saturday night’s game are still available. First puck 7:05 pm. The Gulls have 7 games left on the regular season schedule, 5 at home. When asked if it was too early to start talking about the Gulls post season schedule Elsten responded, "of course not."
