Pedestrian killed in El Cajon hit-and-run

EL CAJON (CNS) – A SUV driver fatally struck a 57-year-old man early Monday outside El Cajon and continued to his residence, later saying he didn’t know what he had hit, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The driver of a 1996 Chevy Suburban was headed west on Dehesa Road east of Willow Glen Drive at about 35 to 45 miles per hour when he veered to the right around 12:35 a.m. and struck the pedestrian, who had been standing at the edge of the roadway, according to a CHP statement.

The person who told authorities about the accident reported seeing a vehicle striking the pedestrian at the Sycuan Casino, according to the CHP’s online incident log. The pedestrian died at the scene, according to the CHP statement.

The SUV driver told authorities that he felt the impact from the crash but was unaware that he had struck a person and drove home, where he was contacted by officers, the CHP said.

The CHP statement said the driver was cooperating with investigators and alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
