Pedestrian on freeway struck and killed

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – Authorities Thursday investigated a fatality on westbound
state Route 54, where a 23-year-old woman walked into traffic and was struck
by two vehicles.

The woman was initially struck by a 2008 Honda driven by a 27-year-old
woman just west of Reo Drive around 7:10 p.m. Wednesday, according to the
California Highway Patrol. She was knocked to the ground, then struck again by
a 2000 Toyota driven by a man, also in his 20s, the CHP reported.

The drivers of both vehicles immediately stopped and attempted to help
the woman, who was taken by ambulance to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where she died
at 7:55 p.m.

Due to the fatality, there were several other minor crashes involving
motorists who swerved or came to a sudden stop to avoid the woman, according to
the CHP.

All westbound lanes of the highway were closed in the area until about
9:15 p.m.

Investigators were working to determine whether the woman intended to
walk in front of traffic or was attempting to cross the roadway, the CHP
reported.
