Update: Female cyclist struck and killed by vehicle in Carlsbad identified
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Thursday – Authorities released the name Thursday of a 59-year-old woman killed in a bicycle accident on a busy coastal street near Agua Hedionda Lagoon.
Joyce Koven Smith of Cardiff-by-the-Sea was riding to the south along a bike path in the 4600 block of Carlsbad Boulevard about 10 a.m. Wednesday when she swerved into an adjacent traffic lane for unknown reasons and was struck by a Ford Fiesta traveling in the same direction.
Smith died at the scene of the crash, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office
The driver involved in the accident will not face any criminal charges, officials said.
Wednesday 12:32 p.m. – A 59-year-old female was fatally struck by a vehicle after swerving into a traffic lane on Carlsbad Boulevard. The initial emergency call was placed at 10:01 a.m. Wednesday morning. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman was struck by a Ford Fiesta being driven by a 64-year-old female motorist. The driver is not thought to have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and the investigation is considered ongoing.
The Medical Examiner’s Office will release further information on the incident once notifications have been made to the victim’s family.
11:27 a.m. – A pedestrian bicyclist was struck and killed by a vehicle near Carlsbad power plant.
