Pentagon looking into mysterious vapor trail

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Defense Department is trying to figure out if a missile was launched off the coast of Southern California — and if so, who fired it.

Video taken by a TV news chopper shows a big vapor trail.

All indications are that the U.S. military was not involved.

Colonel Dave Lapan, a spokesman at the Pentagon, says it may have been a private company. NORAD and the U.S. Northern Command say from all indications, the trail of vapor wasn't caused by a foreign military launching a missile, and there was no threat to America.

Missile tests are common in that area, but they're usually preceded by lots of warnings.
