Downtown standoff ends when boyfriend tackles woman holed up in hotel

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — A SWAT standoff in downtown San Diego ended after the boyfriend of a suicidal woman with a gun pinned her down allowing for police to detain her.

The woman was believed to have holed herself and her boyfriend up in a room of the hotel near 4th Ave and Broadway around 5:30 a.m., San Diego police Officer Dan Lasher said. Police crisis negotiators were summoned to the scene and were able to contact the woman by phone.

Several hours later, the boyfriend tackled her, pinned her down and called for officers.

Lasher said authorities had to shut down streets in the area near the Plaza Hotel near 4th Ave. and Broadway and Metropolitan Transit Service said trolley service has been disrupted. Riders of orange and blue line trolleys were advised to use shuttles running between America Plaza and the Civic Center, according to the Metropolitan Transit System.

No shots were fired. The woman has not been identified.
