Police pursuit begins after man shoots at undercover detective

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — The pursuit of a man Monday night began after he fired at an undercover detective investigating gang activity in the Lemon Grove area leaving three in police custody but the suspected shooter on the loose.

The San Diego Police Detective was investigating reports of gang activity in an unmarked car near Glencoe Drive and Jamacha Road when a man stepped out of a Toyota Corolla and fired several gunshots at the plainclothes officer, San Diego Police Lt. Manny Del Toro said. The officer’s vehicle was struck several times, but the officer was not injured.

The man was found driving west on Jamacha Road where officers conducted a high-risk traffic stop, Del Toro said. At the stop, the man exited the vehicle and ran. Three other people were found in the vehicle and were taken into custody, Del Toro said.

One responding patrol officer fired at the man who continued to run through the surrounding neighborhood’s backyards. It was unknown whether the man was injured by the gunfire, Del Toro said.

Police were still investigating the involvement of the three passengers Wednesday but 31-year-old Kimberly Denise Hooker was booked for attempted murder and two men were booked for weapon charges and police violations, Del Toro said.
