Police say suspect opened fire on house with AK-47

CHULA VISTA (KUSI) – A SWAT team was deployed a South Bay man opened fire a gun into a neighbor's apartment Friday afternoon and then holed up inside his own.

According to Lt. Don Remond, the gunfire erupted in the 1500 block of Brandywine Avenue around 4 p.m.

SWAT teams were called as officers tried to get the shooter — who relatives describe as suicidal — to surrender peacefully.

Northbound lanes on the I-805 exit to Olympic Parkway were closed as a precaution.

Shortly before 6:30 p.m., the suspect exited his apartment and surrendered peacefully, Redmond said. Officers planned to clear the man's residence of any weapons before reopening traffic lanes in the area to the public.

The suspect's name was not immediately available.

No injuries were reported during this incident.
