Police search for shooting suspect in Chollas View

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – On Tuesday San Diego police investigated an officer- involved shooting in Chollas View involving a pair of undercover officers who were searching for gang members.

The officers, members of the SDPD's Street Gang Unit, were responding to a report of gang members standing in the 4600 block of Hartley Street about 10 p.m. Monday, according to San Diego police Lt. Ernie Herbert.

As the officers in an unmarked police car drove westbound on Hartley Street, from 47th Street, a male suspect stepped out into the street from behind a parked car and opened fire, Herbert said in a statement.

Neither undercover officer was struck by the gunfire, Herbert said, noting one of the officers returned fire but also missed.

After the initial gunfire, a third officer in a marked patrol car arrived at the scene and fired toward the suspect but missed, Herbert said. The gunman ran away westbound.

Several people were detained and questioned at the scene early today, according to broadcast reports, but as of 5:30 a.m., no arrests were reported.

The officers who fired their weapons are a seven- and 10-year veteran of the police department.
