Pollution alert in effect in North County after treated sewage pipe leak

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – An estimated 154,000 gallons of treated sewage spilled in North County putting into effect a pollution alert Tuesday.

According to the county Department of Environmental Health, the overflow happened near the 3500 block of Hacienda Drive in Oceanside around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday when a pressurized sanitation pipeline began leaking.

The sewage drained into the San Luis Rey River until city crews were able to control the situation about 15 hours later.

The DEH said the spill did not enter the ocean.

Although the spill consisted of treated sewage, signs warning of contamination will stand in place until follow-up testing deems the waterway safe again.
