Power outage at Disneyland closes a dozen attractions during busy holiday season

ANAHEIM (KUSI) — A power outage at Disneyland Wednesday affected up to a dozen attractions at the theme park, which was crowded with holiday season visitors.

The outage began about 10:45 a.m. as the park neared capacity and led to the evacuation of 10 to 12 rides in “Mickey’s Toontown” and “Fantasyland,” including the Monorail and “It’s a Small World” attractions, according to a Disneyland representative who said riders were escorted off the attractions.

The city provides electricity to the park, but the issue was traced to a Disneyland Resort transformer, according to a statement released by park officials.

About 1 p.m., the park announced via Twitter that it was “currently only accepting guests for re-entry at this time” at Disneyland. “Disneyland California Adventure Park remains available for your enjoyment.”

Shortly afterward, a park spokeswoman told City News Service that power had been mostly restored to all of the affected rides in Toontown and some attractions in Fantasyland. As of 3 p.m., a handful of rides remained off-line in Fantasyland.

Frustrated park visitors took to Twitter to vent.

One man asked whether “there any recouping admission considering half the park for our20-month-old is down due to a power outage?”

Another wrote: “Way to ruin a family trip,” and another tweeted: “How’s Disneyland gonna have a power outage the day we paid $124 for peak day tickets?!”

Yet another upset guest tweeted: “A momentary power `dip,’ thanks Disneyland. Nearing the two-hour mark of this power outage … How are you going to fix this Disneyland? You have thousands of visitors from all over the world! Extend the hours of operation at the very least!”

Disneyland was offering refunds on a case-by-case basis, a theme park spokeswoman said Wednesday afternoon.

The outage also came on a day when members of the Rose Bowl Game-bound Georgia and Oklahoma college football teams visited Disney California Adventure. Disneyland Resort visits by Rose Bowl Game teams began in 1959, four years after Disneyland Park opened.
