President of Southwestern Community College District Governing Board reappointed
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The president of the Southwestern Community College District Governing Board was reappointed by Gov. Jerry Brown Thursday to the California State Teachers Retirement System Board.
Nora Vargas, 44, was first appointed last year to the 12-member panel, which oversees the state’s pension system for teachers.
The San Diego Democrat is vice president of the community and government relations at Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest, and before that was executive director at the Latino Issues Forum.
Her position requires Senate confirmation.
Wednesday, the governor reappointed Michael Bishop to the California Physician Assistant Board, where he has served since 2012.
The 65-year-old San Diegan is an attending anesthesiologist and clinical professor of anesthesiology at UC San Diego since 2006. He was previously a staff anesthesiologist at several other hospitals.
The board handles licensing, education and enforcement of physician assistants.
Bishop, who is registered without party preference, won’t have to go through Senate confirmation.
Both positions pay $100 per diem.
