Grossmont Foothillers 28, The Bishop’s School Knights 10
Grossmont goes on to start the season with a win, defeating Bishop’s 28-10.
In the 1st quarter, Bishop’s QB Tyler Buchner was helped off the field after going down awkwardly on a fake punt play, he would not return.
Grossmont maintained possession for the better-half of the game after giving up a field goal to Bishop’s early.
Grossmont scored the first touchdown of the night thanks to an athletic 40-yard run by Robert Tucker to move the ball down to the 23, where Jahmal Nevels was able to finish off the drive with a 17 yard TD run.
Grossmont would go on to score 21 more unanswered points, starting with a 24-yard TD pass by Jamie Odom over the middle to Skip Waltower as the second half winded down.
In the 3rd quarter Jamie Odom threw for a second touchdown, on another strike, this time to Damari Crawford for 20 yards and a score.
After another unsuccessful drive the Knights attempted to punt the ball, and when the snap sailed over the kicker’s head, he was able to chase it down and surprisingly, he got the punt off. But when the ball bounced and fell into the hands of Grossmont’s Thomas Mangum, he took off down the sidelines, waving to defenders as he crossed the goal line to increase the lead to 28-3.
The Knights made a nice play in the 4th quarter as backup quarterback Clay Petry would connect with Clarence Freeman for a 70-yard TD pass to make it a 28-10 final.
It looked as though the Knights severely missed their leader and quarterback in Tyler Buchner, and we wish him well.
PREVIEW – On Friday we have Bishop’s at Grossmont for what should be an exciting Friday night. Football’s back! Grossmont #10 will be squaring up against Bishop #20 at 7 PM.
Bishop’s is returning from a 9-1 season last year where they placed #9. Over the past two years Bishop’s has a record of 23-2, but after losing eight players on the defensive side of the ball this offseason it will be interesting to see if the defense can hold up. Some players to watch on the offense are Bishop’s quarterback Tyler Buchner and wide receiver Clarence Freeman. Tyler Buchner flashed his talent last year as a freshman throwing for 512 yards and 6 touchdowns, connecting with Freeman for 343 yards and 3 TDs.
Grossmont finished up their season last as year as the #10 seed after going 7-4 in the 2017 season. For Grossmont we have a player to watch in Chris Alba. He is in his junior year and plays linebacker for the Foothillers. He is very quick to the football and leads Grossmont’s linebacker corps. Another fun player to watch for Grossmont will be quarterback Jamie Odom. He is a dual threat quarterback who has been known to be just as dangerous with the long ball as he is with his legs.
