Point Loma Pointers 50, Bonita Vista Barons 0

Friday night’s game marked a second straight victory for the Point Loma Pointers, while the Bonita Vista Barons struggled to get on the board and suffered another tough loss. This game was all Point Loma from start to finish, as they came away with a 50-0 win.

Pointers quarterback Kyle Grady had an excellent performance, getting it done both in the air on the ground with two running touchdowns and two throwing touchdowns.  Grady’s 58-yard touchdown pass to Malik Moore put Point Loma up 7-0 to start the game, which quickly turned into 15-0 after Josh Ball ran it in 4 yards for a touchdown.

Bonita Vista had a great chance to to minimize the deficit when they had the ball all the way on the 4-yard line late in the first, but they could not capitalize and score. Ironically, this same scenario would happen later in the third quarter, but again, the Barons could not advance the ball from the 4-yard line to the end-zone.

In the second quarter, Cameron Auva’a scored his first touchdown of the night after taking it 10 yards to the house, making the score 22-0 Pointers.  Although Barons quarterback Franklin Forbes put forth a strong effort to advance the ball down the field and create scoring opportunities, his offensive line struggled to block for him. In his efforts to avoid being sacked, Forbes had more than one of his passes picked off by the agile Pointers’ defense. An interception by Moore in the third quarter led to a QB keeper for Grady, making the score 29-0 Pointers before halftime.

Other Pointers who scored touchdowns in the second half included Matthew Fa’alele and Austin Haines. In total, six different Point Loma players scored at least one touchdown. Grady finished off the game with his second quarterback keeper, as the Pointers came out on top with a shutout win.

Next Friday, Point Loma will look to extend their win streak as they take on Olympian, while Bonita Vista will aim for their first win of the season against Chula Vista. Tune in to PPR on KUSI every Friday night at 10:30pm to keep up with all the best highlights and recaps.

PREVIEW: Week 4 of the Prep Pigskin Report takes us to Point Loma High School, where the Pointers will be taking on the Bonita Vista Barons this Friday at 6:30pm. In this non-conference matchup, the Pointers are looking for their second straight home victory, while the Barons and first-year coach Aaron Jones are seeking their first win of the 2017 season.

Point Loma, anchored by long-time coach Mike Hastings, is coming off a clutch 36-34 win over Lincoln last Friday in the Jersey Mikes City Game of the Week. This marked their first victory of the season. The Pointers fell to El Camino 34-12 in their home opener, and lost to Ramona by a score of 21-14 in Week 2. The Pointers are not deep, featuring about 35 players, but they are tough. In each game, they have sought to make improvements from the previous game, and they have put up a fight.

Bonita Vista began the season looking for redemption after losing a whopping 23 seniors last year. Coach Jones, who came from the highly successful Madison program, took over at the helm, looking to spread out the Barons’ offense. But so far, it has been “a daunting task,” said Jones. The Barons suffered a 39-7 loss to Poway in their home opener, followed by a 57-0 defeat at home against San Marcos, and, last Friday, a 56-6 loss at Madison High School, in front of Jones’ old coaching staff. The Barons’ offense has not had much of an opportunity to execute the spread system Coach Jones envisions.

Not only is the Bonita Vista team young and inexperienced, but they also have a tough schedule this season. “It’s a learning curve,” said Jones. “The odds are stacked against us, but I tell my players, ‘Don’t give up, just keep fighting.’ We need to focus on the battles, and win a couple battles before we focus on the war.” Looking ahead to Friday night, Coach Jones said, “This could be a game where we might be able to get some confidence.”

The last time these two teams played each other on September 16, 2016, the Pointers beat the Barons 27-20 at Bonita Vista. Point Loma will look to have similar success this year, while Bonita Vista will look to change the narrative.

Key players to look for on the Point Loma squad include quarterback Kyle Grady, running back Josh Ball – who rushed for more than 1,000 yards last season -, and linebacker/tight-end Matthew Fa’alele. Referring to Fa’alele, Coach Hastings said, “He’s a beast. He gets after it and our kids feed off him.”

Players to watch for on Bonita Vista’s team include wide receiver/defensive back Raymond Terrones, running back Tahj Stewart, and outside linebacker Diego Vasquez. At 6’3” and 275 pounds, Vazquez anchors a line that suffered greatly due to graduation. He is, in fact, the lone returning starter. "It is a young bunch, but they go hard," said Coach Jones.

Kickoff is set for 6:30pm. Make sure to tune in to the Prep Pigskin Report this Friday at 10:30pm on KUSI for recaps and highlights of this game and more throughout the county, and be sure to follow @RedJacketArmy on Instagram and Twitter.
