Sweetwater Red Devils 41, Calexico Bulldogs 18

The Calexico Bulldogs made the long road trip south for this matchup against the Sweetwater Red Devils with both teams still looking for their first win of the season.

The Red Devils would get on the scoreboard first after Quarterback Manuel Salazar found Alfredo Uolla for a 45-yard touchdown pass. After a three out for Calexico, Sweetwater running back Francisco Velazquez would find an open hole and score a 72-yard touchdown run. Sweetwater would lead 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Bulldogs would get on the board with a 21-yard touchdown run by running back Andy Roja. On the proceeding possession, Sweetwater would score, this time off a 59-yard touchdown run by Francisco Velazquez. After another three and out for Calexico, Red Devil Manuel Salazar would find Alfredo Uolla once again in the end zone to make it 28-6 at the half.

The second half did not get any easier for the Bulldogs. Their defense had no answer for a Sweetwater’s rushing attack. Sweetwater went on to win big with a score of 41-18 over Calexico. The Red Devils picked up their first victory of the season after losing their first five games. With this win they were able to score interim Head Coach Wesley Charles his first victory. The Bulldogs remain winless this season.

PREVIEW: The Calexico Bulldogs (0-4) head south this Friday night to take on the Sweetwater Red Devils (0-5). Both teams are looking to end their losing streak and have their first win of the season.

Sweetwater was unable to get their running game started last week versus Ramona and were not able to get on the scoreboard until late in the fourth quarter. Their defense, specifically the defensive backs, will have to negate how many big plays get through them after last week’s defeat. The Red Devils have been blown out in three of their five games, and twice have failed to even score a touchdown. For this team to get a victory on Friday they will be relying on the efforts of sophomore running back Marty Sesma.

On the other hand, Calexico has had close games these past two weeks but has not been able to pull out the victory. The Bulldogs must find success through the air with their spread offense. It will all start with quarterback Frank Moreno if Calexico wants to get their first victory of the season.

Game time is set for 7:00 PM at Sweetwater High School, and do not forget to catch the highlights on the PPR at 10:30 PM Friday night.
