Carlsbad Lancers 28, Del Norte Nighthawks 0
This Friday night, the Del Norte Nighthawks faced off against the Carlsbad Lancers in their season home opener. While the Del Norte flock, the school’s spirit section, was energized and ready for the game, the Del Norte defense was not completely prepared for Carlsbad’s offense.
The first quarter consisted of a series of fumbles and interceptions for both sides as the two teams went back and forth. A highlight for the Nighthawks when Anthony Ullrich recovered a fumble by the Lancer offense at the five yard line, and was able to stop another Carlsbad drive from turning into a touch down.
When the second half started, Carlsbad’s offense gathered speed and energy, and scored their first touch down of the 2016 season when Jason Siaosi ran the ball three yards for a touchdown. With the Lancers up 7-0, Carlsbad’s offense continued to stay hot. After the ensuing kickoff, Del Norte fumbled the ball at the one yard line, and Trent Nyberg recovered it in order to give the game a score of 14-0. While Del Norte was able to make some important defensive stops and was successful on causing several Carlsbad’s turnovers, their offense wasn’t able to produce a score.
Carlsbad’s Jesse Atiga was responsible for the next two touchdowns in the game, advancing the score to 28-0. Atiga’s touchdown was the final score for the night, and the game resulted in the first season win for Carlsbad. While Del Norte went home with the loss, the first night of the 2016 season was full of energy and buzz at Del Norte high school, and promises another exciting season to come.
In the first home game of their season, the Del Norte Nighthawks will be taking on the Carlsbad Lancers in a non-conference game at 7pm. The two schools don’t cross paths too frequently, and should make for an interesting Friday night match up. Although they finished in fifth place last season, the Nighthawks have a large number of their top players returning including their senior running back, Robby Hauck, and senior quarterback, Jake Moore.
A division three team, Del Norte (led by head coach Patrick Coleman) will be taking on the division one Lancers. As the 2015 Avocado League champions, the Lancers bring many strengths to the table such as their ability to score about 30 points a game on average. Led by head coach Thad MacNeal, the team finished a perfect 4-0 in league, and his ability to lead the team’s talented athletes has been key in their past successes.
The match up between the Nighthawks and the Lancers should be a high energy game since it’s opening night of the 2016 season. Del Norte will find a tough opponent in the highly ranked Carlsbad Lancers, but a home field advantage could mean all the difference for the Nighthawks. The Del Norte high school student body will be dressing in all blue and green to display their school spirit, and the Flock (the student cheering section) promises to create a fun and enthusiastic environment for everyone who attends.
