Lincoln Hornets 54, Chula Vista Spartans 20

The first game of the year for the Lincoln Hornets might have been a tougher battle if it wasn’t for the play of the defense.  After allowing the Chula Vista Spartans to march down the field on their opening drive, it was the interception by Jhaelon Brazile who returned it all the way back for a 92 yard TD that may have changed the whole game.

The Spartans managed to take the lead after Victor Agraz and Kajahan Duncan each scored a rushing TD to give the Spartans an early 2nd quarter lead.  But on the ensuing kickoff, the Hornets return man, Don Chapman, gave his team the lift they needed when he took it all the way to the house for a 70 yard TD return giving the Hornets a 14-13 lead.

It was all Lincoln after that. Captain Asante Hartzog went on to throw 3 TD and added a rushing TD for good measure. The defense for the Hornets tightened their screws and put a lock down on the Chula Vista Offense. Chula Vista was never able to get the passing game going which made things a lot easier for the Lincoln defense.

When it was all said and done, the Hornets secured a 54-20 win to start the season 1-0, while Chula Vista will try to even their record next week on the road.

Football fans the wait is almost over.  The 2017 season is almost upon us and my first game of the year will take me to Lincoln High School where the Hornets will play host to the Chula Vista Spartans in a non-conference game.  The Hornets will be looking to improve upon last year’s nail biting loss in the semi-finals. Quarterback and Captain, Asante Hartzog, will lead a Hornets team that has a lot of experience with 14 seniors on its squad.

Chula Vista is also looking to improve upon its first round playoff exit from a year ago. The challenge will not be easy for the Spartans as they start their season with two games on the road. This year’s team has a nice balance of seniors, juniors, and sophomores which should keep the Spartans competitive for the next few years.

One thing is for sure, this game could go down to the battle in the trenches.  Both teams have strong lines on both sides of the ball with both teams boasting four players over 200 lbs.

It should be a good game to start the 19th season of the Prep Pigskin Report.  Be sure to tune in to KUSI this Friday at 10:30 pm to see the game highlights from this and all the games.
