Coronado, 12 University City, 30

University City improved to 5-1 with a 30-12 win over Coronado on Friday night.

The Centurions kicked things off right away with a 9-yard run by Marcus Patterson.

Steven Weiss followed that up with a big catch to put the centurions in Coronado territory.

a few plays later, the 6 foot 2 freshmen Casey Granfors scored on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Drake Aguon. University City leads 7-0.

Still in the first quarter, kicker Thomas Reasoner did something you don’t see very often in high school football. Reasoner drilled a 41-yard field goal to extend the Centurioins lead 10-0.

The second quarter started off sloppy for both teams. University City fumbled which put coronado in good field position. But not for long. Coronado fumbled and gave it right back to the centurions.

Toward the end of the second, Aguon kept it to himself and took it 26-yards for the touchdown. University City leads 17-0.

After the half, Briley Knight came in as quarterback and was able to give the Islanders some momentum.

Knight took it 71-yards to the end zone to put Coronado on the board, 17-6.

Alejandro Carrera intercepted Aguon to help set up the islanders next score. Knight then tossed a 16-yard touchdown to Christopher Haas to cut the Centurions lead 17-12.

In the fourth, university city was able to pull away with back-to-back defensive touchdowns. Michael Kassissieh was able to intercept Knight and take it in for the touchdown.

Coronado got the ball back and the Centurions defense stepped up again. This time, Grant Ruthenberg picked up the fumble and found the end zone.

Coronado will try to get back on a winning streak next week against Kearny. The Centurions have a huge game versus Bishops.

PREVIEW: Week 7 features a Central League match up between the Coronado Islanders (3-2) and the University City Centurions (4-1).

Coronado will travel to UC after a much-needed bye last week.

Quarterback Ian Thorleifson is still getting comfortable with the offense, so the Islanders will rely heavily on their star running back, Christopher Haas.

Haas is currently fourth in the county in rushing yards with 714. He’s scored 60 of Coronado’s 118 points this year.

Haas is not only lethal from the running back position; he is good punt returner, too. His ability to contribute highly at both positions has put him on the Silver Pigskin Watch List. We see you, Chris.

Coronado’s defense will need to really step it up if they want to stop the Centurions explosive offense.

In the last three games, University City has scored 155 points. That is in large part due to quarterback Drake Aguon and wide receiver Gavin Rasmussen.

Aguon has thrown for 876 yards, while Rasmussen has piled on more than 530 receiving yards.

The tandem has gotten better each week and has become something special to watch.

It’s not all offense, though. The Centurions know how to take care of the ball on defense as well.

No team has scored more than 14 points against them all season.  Linebacker Grant Ruthenberg is a big reason why. He is third in the county in tackles, with 58.

Will the Centurions notch their 5th win of the season? Or will the Islanders come away with a victory on the road?  Watch the highlights this Friday at 10:30 p.m. on KUSI.
