Del Norte 31, San Marcos 42
Del Norte came into Friday night’s matchup versus San Marcos eyeing an upset, and they came very close. Del Norte led into the fourth quarter 31-21 but gave up 21 un-answered points in the end as San Marcos stays undefeated 42-31 over Del Norte.
By the first quarter San Marcos looked great and seemed to be rolling early leading 14-0 at the end of the first. Second quarter was different as Del Norte Quarterback Parker Lappin started to control his offense. Lappin first found John Zuniga for 21-yard Touchdown making it 14-7 then Lappin took it in himself for a 30-yard Touchdown to tie it up at 14. Del Norte and San Marcos exchanged Touchdowns to make it 21 all at halftime.
Second half, Del Norte needed to make a statement and did with a Third Quarter Touchdown from Lappin to Montrice Jones. By the start of the fourth quarter Del Norte lead 31-21. Then, Del Norte’s gas started to run on empty. QB Will Freed of San Marcos lead the way finding Tyler Nix to take the deficit to four. Two minutes later, Freed scores on a 4-yard QB run and get the two-point conversion. Del Norte’s rebuttal drive fails and San Marcos Running Back Semaj Wren scores to seal the deal with a minute left in the fourth and San Marcos survives a serious scare from the Nighthawks.
San Marcos is now 7-0 and firmly in the drivers seat in the Avocado-East standings. They face the Vista Panthers next week. Del Norte’s valiant effort came short and are now 3-4 as they have another difficult test with Mission Hills next Friday
