Game of the Week: Otay Ranch Mustangs 31, Eastlake Titans 28
A lot of big events happening before the Game of the Week at Otay Ranch (4-3) as the Mustangs host the Titans of Eastlake (5-2). Starting with teacher appreciation week as well as homecoming, the Mustangs were able to end the night in celebration after a close game ended in a victory for Otay, 31-28.
This game may have started off to a slow start but after a bad snap by Eastlake is recovered by Darian Williams to get the ball rolling for the Mustangs setting them up to score a field goal a few plays later. A 51 yard touchdown pass by Jonte Stewart to Zeek Cruz put the Otay Ranch up 10-0, but Eastlake answers back with a touchdown of their own by Kevin Bateman, going into halftime 17-7.
Coming back after the half Jonte Stewart throws a beautiful 75 yard touchdown pass to Josh Lira. The Titans answer back with a 30 yard touchdown pass to Jalyn Jackson as the back and forth continues throughout the game. The battle came to an end when David Hafoka catches an interception that would eventually turn into a touchdown giving the Mustangs a win for the second year in a row over the Titans.
Preview: When Otay Ranch (3-3) hosts #10 Eastlake (5-1) Friday night the chants of “Defense” are bound to be heard all night long regardless of which team has the ball. Defense sets the tone for both teams and, throw in the fact that it’s the Metro-Mesa League opener for both squads, it will be a physical battle.
The Titans of Eastlake have given up just 13.1 points per game led by LB Josh McCurty who already has been credited with 89 tackles. They are coming off a 35-0 shutout victory against Chula Vista last week.
The Mustangs have allowed just 13.6 points per game and their head coach, Lance Christensen, is the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. LB Manu Ta’a (team leading 35 tackles) and DL Michael Touchette (20 tackles 4 sacks) set the tone for a defense that has helped keep their team in every game they have played. After shutting out Mt. Carmel 33-0 in their season opener their next five games were decided by an average margin of 9.6 points.
