Nelson Photo Pigskin Idol Game of the Week: Serra Conquistadors 40, El Cajon Valley Braves 16

The Serra High Conquistadors looked to conquer the El Cajon Valley Braves and they did just that with a 40-16 win in front of their home crowd.

In the first quarter, El Cajon Valley showed no fear as they pushed through Serra’s defense to what was a scoring drive with all runs.  Maquel Garner picked up where he left off in the 2016 season by punching in a 14-yard touchdown run. ECV has an 8-0 lead with the two-point conversion.  The Braves would recover a fumble and score one more time in the first half but this time it was Deandre Kelmon with the quarterback keep from two yards out.

Serra was quick to answer with a beautiful touchdown pass from Tim Zebroski to Ty Dixon but the two-point conversion was not good leading to the halftime score of 16-6 ECV.

The second half consisted of quarterback Tim Zebroski and running back Myles Bryant from Serra High.  Together Zebroski and Bryant had three touchdowns to take the lead 34-16.  In addition to the duo, Zebroski connected with TJ Silvestri for a 50-yard touchdown pass leading to the final score of 40-16.

Next week, the Conquistadors get a quick break as they have a bye week.  On the other hand, the El Cajon Valley Braves head to Kearny High to take on the Komets for a 6:30pm matchup.

PREVIEW: This Friday, August 25th, brings the beginning of the season for high school football and the 19th season of the Prep Pigskin Report.  All schools will be battling for their first win of the season and hope to do so as the season goes on.  One of them being the El Cajon Valley Braves as they travel to face the Conquistadors of Serra High School at 6:30pm.

The last time both teams faced each other was the Division IV first round of playoffs where Serra earned a 24-22 win to advance.  El Cajon Valley ended the 2016 season with a record of 5-6.  Head Coach Parris Pisiona enters his third season with the Braves with key returners such as Maquel Garner, Andre Robles, and Mose Kaleuati.  As the leading returning rusher with 595 yards and six touchdowns, Garner is expected to keep the Braves running game effective.

For Serra High School, second year Head Coach Dru Smith and his defense are ready to cause mayhem, which starts with Jimmy Nguyen and Kieve Curry.  On the other side of the ball, the Conquistadors will run the spread with playmakers Ty Dixon, Myles Bryant, Chance Cannon, and Benolter Gambles.  Lastly, the Conquistadors have sophomore Tim Zebroski at quarterback and have full confidence their young QB will deliver.

Who will come out on top and record their first win of the season?  Tune into the Prep Pigskin Report this Friday night at 10:30pm on KUSI for highlights all throughout San Diego.
