Mira Mesa Marauders 42, Escondido Cougars 7
Head coach Chris Thompson improved his record at the helm of the Mira Mesa Marauders football program to 2-0 with a 42-7 victory at home against Escondido High School on Friday.
The Marauders started the game strong with a long return on the opening kickoff, which set up a short touchdown run for senior running back Isaiah Lynch. The early score certainly seemed to set the tone for the rest of the game, as the Marauders’ offense, led by senior quarterback Noah Tumblin, put up 28 points in the first half alone.
Escondido managed one score against a stifling Marauders defense when junior running back Matt Malone squeezed into the end zone for an 11-yard score in the first quarter.
However, Tumblin’s two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown proved too much for the Cougars to handle.
Mira Mesa was able to get their first glance at Tumblin under center this season as he did not play in the Marauders’ first game of the season.
Last week, their attack was heavily centered around the run game, but this week they executed a much more balanced plan of attack, as seen by Tumblin’s two touchdown passes. With Tumblin back under center, the Marauders will be a force to be reckoned with on the ground as well as through the air.
Mira Mesa will try to continue their trend of winning at home next week when they host the Mt. Carmel Sundevils next Friday, and Escondido will look to regroup at home against the Chula Vista Spartans.
PREVIEW: In 2018, Mira Mesa is playing in the newly realigned Eastern Conference. The Marauders have already shown an energized rushing attack with a new coaching regime at the helm, and look to carry that momentum forward as they face a 1-0 Escondido Cougars team in a non-league matchup.
The Mira Mesa Marauders are coming off a week 1 victory against Patrick Henry in which they rushed for 315 yards, including a 153 yard, 3 touchdown game from senior running back Elijah Lynch.
Head coach Chris Thompson is in his first year as head coach of the Marauders, although he has a long history with the blue and gold. Coach Thompson played at Mira Mesa in high school, and was an assistant coach with the Marauders for 22 years. In his time since then, Thompson was head coach at Bonita Vista, where he led them to a 12-3 record and their first section championship, and last season worked as an assistant coach at Helix high school. Thompson takes over a Marauder team that was 0-4 in the Western League last year.
The Escondido Cougars will enter Friday night’s game with a win under their belts as well. In week 1 the Cougars defeated the Hilltop Lancers 31-20 behind 3 rushing touchdowns from their sophomore quarterback Robby Ramos.
Both of these teams have thrived on the ground so far, so expect a classic ground and pound football game.
