Game of the Week: Helix Highlanders 57, Grossmont 3

The Helix Highlanders announced their presence on the first possession of the game at Grossmont and didn’t look back en route to a 57-3 blowout victory.

It was Senior Night for the host Foothillers, however, Helix came out firing on all cylinders. On the opening drive QB Carson Baker took a flea flicker pass and threw 53 yards to WR Isaiah Wooden to take a 7-0 lead. After Grossmont failed on a FG attempt due to a bad snap, Fato Noa took advantage with a 20 yard touchdown run and a 14-0 Helix lead. Grossmont ended up deep in their own territory when another bad snap; this one into their own end zone and recovered by the Highlander’s Isaac Taylor-Stewart for a touchdown and a 21-0 lead for Helix.

Helix extended the lead to 35-0 before the end of the 1st quarter. The second half was played with a running clock. QB Carson Baker finished the night an efficient 12-16 236 yards and 3 touchdowns. RB Fato Noa carried the ball 16 times for 250 yards and 2 touchdowns. He added another touchdown receiving.

Helix now has the inside track on the Grossmont-Hills league improving to 8-1; 4-0. They finish the regular season next week at Valhalla. Grossmont falls to 6-3; 3-1. They will play at West Hills next week to end the regular season.

Preview: When toe meets leather at Grossmont High School on Friday night the Foothillers and the Helix Highlanders will be playing for the inside track on the Grossmont-Hills League title. Both teams are undefeated in league play, but Grossmont will be looking to do something they haven’t done yet this season; beat a team ranked in the top 10.

The Foothillers battled a ranked Bishop’s team on opening night but couldn’t overcome an early hole. Three weeks later they led at the half against Eastlake only to be shutout in the second half. So here they are at 6-2; 3-0 in league hosting yet another ranked team in the #2 Highlanders. Offensively, Grossmont will try to establish the running game early and often. Senior RB Shevell Sterling Jr. has rushed for 764 yards and 16 touchdowns. Senior WR Josh Moala (377 yards 6 TD) and Junior WR Thomas Magnum (465 yards 4 TD) provide big play ability. Defensively Senior DL Julian Sanderlin can be a game changer having racked up 12 sacks this season. Senior DB Andrew Lira is a ballhawk with 5 interceptions.

Helix is 7-1; 3-0 in league. Take away their 23-6 loss to Paraclete and the Highlanders have allowed a total of 21 points in the other 7 games combined which include three shutouts. When scheming to stop Helix it is a collection of “pick your poison” players. Senior WR/DB Isaac Taylor -Stewart has 7 touchdowns combined rushing and receiving but will make you pay for throwing his way as a DB with 2 interceptions. Senior QB Carson Baker has thrown for 1,474 yards with 23 touchdowns and just 3 interceptions while completing 69% of his passes. His favorite targets are Senior Rashad Scott (199 yards 6 TD) and Senior Isaiah Wooden (458 yards 7 TD).

The winner of this game will clinch at least a tie for the Grossmont-Hills League. Helix is looking to continue rolling to their 7th straight win while Grossmont is trying to make their third time against a ranked opponent a charm.
