Hilltop Lancers 41, Escondido Cougars 27

Host Hilltop Lancers prevailed in a successful yet tough battle over the visiting Escondido Cougars.

Scoring twice within the first seven minutes the Lancers looked ready to fight right out of the gates but the Cougars didn’t get spooked. The Cougars answered with a pitch from Kellen McCoy to Marcio Souffront for a 17-yard run touchdown.

The Lancers attack, quickly, once again with a pick-6 from Angel Pineda.

Escondido tries to answer by inching their way down the field but Hilltop’s Dominic Esparza forces the Escondido fumble on the Lancers own 36. It doesn’t take long for the Lancers to capitalize on the fumble with Christian Llanes scoring another Hilltop touchdown, making it 26-7 Hilltop.

By the pattern of the game it seemed to be all Hilltop but Escondido doesn’t go down without a fight. In only 4 plays following halftime Escondido’s Kellen McCoy passes to Quinton Gaudet for a short, but needed, 15-yard touchdown.

Hilltop answers the Escondido touchdown with 30-yard pass from Alex Tejeda to Gus Ferreira who runs for a 55-yard touchdown. But Escondido’s Marcio Souffront returns the kick-off for an 80-yard kick off return bringing the Cougars right back in the game, 34-21 Hilltop.

Escondido continues to close the gap with a touchdown pass from Kellen McCoy to Christafer Jackson on a 52-yard scoring drive, 34-27 Hilltop.

Hilltop regains the football despite Escondido’s attempt at an on-side kick. One plan in Hilltop turns the ball over with a forced fumble by Escondido but four plays later Escondido turns the ball over to Hilltop on the Lancers own 37-yard line.

The Lancers capitalize on the fumble with another touchdown for Dominic Esparza. The Lancers go on to win the game, 41-27 Hilltop.

Next week, the Lancers will travel to Granite Hills to take on the Eagles while Escondido travels to Fallbrook looking to take on the Warriors. With both teams on the road they will look to advance their records and come out on top. Tune in to the Prep Pigskin Report next Friday, October 7th to see each teams highlights and much more.

PREVIEW: The Escondido Cougars (2-3) will travel to take on the Hilltop Lancers (3-2) in a non-league game Friday night of Week 6.

The last time these two teams met was back in 2005 at Hilltop where the Cougars out scored the Lancers in a 45-3 victory. This year, as with many of the San Diego teams, both teams have first year coaches who will compete against each other for the first time.

Greg Marshall, junior free safety and wide receiver, is a huge asset for the Lancers. Playing both sides of the football, Marshall averages 3.3 tackles per game. Not only does Greg Marshall play both sides of the ball, he is also a three-sport athlete for the Lancers playing football, basketball, and baseball.

Along with Greg Marshall, on the offensive side of the ball, the Lancers will play their wide receiver, Gus Ferreira. This season, Ferreira has scored 4 touchdowns and has 425 receiving yards.

The visiting Cougars will hit the gridiron with senior quarterback, Kellen McCoy, and junior running back, Kevin Rodriguez. Rodriguez and McCoy, who have been a consistent duo for the Cougars, will look to prove themselves on the road at Hilltop and hope to clench their third win of the season.

As each team comes off a loss last week they will both strive to be victorious over the other on Friday night at Hilltop. Tune in to the Prep Pigskin Report Friday at 10:30pm to see their highlights.
