Grossmont Foothillers 64, Hilltop Lancers 3

The Grossmont Foothillers started quick and didn’t stop as they beat the Hilltop Lancers 64-3.

The Foothillers started with a pick six as Noah Cress intercepted Daniel McPherren and returned it 30 yards for a pick six.

Next, it was the Foothiller’s offense that took over with Jamie Odom at the helm.

It was a pair of 25 yard touchdowns thrown by Odom that got him warmed up. First, was to Thomas Mangum then, it was Josh Moala catching a 25 yard touchdown.

Hilltop’s David Delgado got the Lancers on the board with a 30 yard field goal making the score 21-3 Grossmont.

Next up to find the end zone for the Foothillers was Shevell Sterling Jr. who scampered in for a 7 yard touchdown run. Grossmont’s Amber Huff also had an outstanding night with her foot after she smacked in a 28 yard field goal straight through the uprights.

One of the plays of the night came in the second quarter when Odom found Moala for a 60 yard touchdown pass. To close the half the Foothillers scored a pair of running touchdowns. Again it was, Shevell Sterling Jr. who scored from 2 yards out. Right before half Ryan Miller ran in from 15 yards out to put the Foothillers up 51-3 at halftime.

The game ended at 64-3 Grossmont on top. The Lancers drop to 1-2 and visit Olympian in Week 4. The Foothillers go to 2-1 and host Eastlake in Week 4.

PREVIEW: The Week 3 matchup between the Hilltop Lancers (1-1) and the Grossmont Foothillers (1-1) looks to be one of the tightest contests of the week.

The Foothillers are at home for the third straight week. They will be looking for a second straight win after beating Olympian in Week 2, 37-21.

For Grossmont, it is a mix of young talent and veteran leadership. Sophomore Jamie Odom has had a superb start to the season throwing for 446 yards, rushing for 48 yards, and scoring 5 touchdowns. Senior Shevell Sterling Jr. has also gotten off to a fast start with 199 rushing yards with 105 receiving yards.

The defense is led by seniors Daisean Crawford and Andrew Lira. Lira and Crawford have combined for 52 tackles in just the first two weeks of the season. As a team, Grossmont has sacked the opposing quarterback 9 times.

The Foothillers will look to their strong receiving core and senior leadership on defense to push past the Lancers.

However, Hilltop has weapons of their own. Starting with senior Jeremiah Rivera, who in their Week 1 win against La Jolla rushed for 150 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Rivera scored again in the Lancer’s Week 2 loss to Eastlake. He caught senior Daniel Mcpherren’s first touchdown pass of the season.

This will be their first meeting since 2015, where the Foothillers went down and beat the Lancers on their home field, 34-14.
