Preview: Hoover vs. Francis Parker

Both teams are entering the game after close Week 1 wins. The last time Hoover and Francis Parker faced off in the regular season was in 2010. The Lancers won that meeting 27-21. Five Lancers returned this season from last year’s All-Coastal League team. Quarterback Khaleel Jenkins will help lead the team after throwing for 1,223 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. The 6 foot 1, 200 pound senior also rushed for 843 yards, in addition to recording 45 tackles as a defensive back. Defensively, first-team all-leaguer Jordan Heath-Genmark and second-team all-leaguer Robbie Giannella will try to slow down the Cardinals offense, which averaged 28 points per game last year.

Jenkins will be under pressure from a tough Hoover defense. The Cardinals defense only allowed 95 points all last season. Nine defensive starters are returning from that team, which is led by Austin Brown, Jaquille Bradford and Dominique Whitfield. Bradford and Whitfield led the state with an impressive 28 sacks. On top of his defensive efforts, Bradford will also contribute to the run game. He will join the top returning rusher, George Jones. The Cardinals rushed for more than 160 yards a game last season. Quarterback Zyair Velazquez will look for his receivers such as Whitfield to put points on the board.
