Vista Panthers 49, Hueneme Vikings 7
Vista opened their football season with a dominant 49-7 win over the visiting Hueneme Vikings on Military Appreciation Night.
The Panthers got off to a hot start when quarterback Josh Davies found Desmond Taua on a wheel route on the third play of the game. Taua broke a tackle and scampered past the rest of the defense for a 77-yard touchdown to put Vista ahead 7-0 early.
Sloppy play and penalties stalled drives for both teams the remainder of the first quarter.
The flood gates opened in the second quarter as Vista used a plethora of talented backs to break down Hueneme’s defensive front. Desmond Taua tacked on a 13-yard rushing touchdown on the Panthers’ first drive of the quarter, putting Vista ahead 14-0. Speedster Tyler Stacier took a sweep for a 6-yard touchdown run, and a couple of hard-nosed touchdown runs by fullback David Flores gave the Panthers a 35-0 lead at the break.
Hueneme showed signs of life early in the 3rd quarter with a touchdown on their opening drive and a fumble recovery a few plays later, but turnovers and penalties halted their comeback.
Vista continued to dominate on the ground and would go on to add a couple more rushing touchdowns, pushing the score to 49-7.
Vista will host La Costa Canyon next Friday. Hueneme looks to rebound next week as they travel to face Channel Islands Friday night.
PREVIEW – The Vista Panthers’ 2018 football season kicks off at home with a non-league matchup against the Hueneme Vikings on Friday night.
This is the first time the two teams have faced off, and emotions will undoubtedly be running high as both squads will look to start the new season with a win.
Third-year head coach Dave Bottom and the Panthers aim to improve on a difficult 2017 campaign which ended with an early postseason exit and a record of 3-8 overall. As the new high school football season begins, Vista now boasts a well experienced roster and strong rushing attack. Senior Tyler Stacier and junior Desmond Taua have become a dangerous duo of playmakers on both sides of the ball, seeing plenty of action as both running backs and safeties. Brothers Josh and Jesse Davies are crucial to the team’s success as well, serving as leaders at quarterback and linebacker, respectively.
Hueneme seeks to start the season on the right track after finishing the 2017 season with record of 5-5. Fifth-year head coach Lui Toilolo lost a lot of senior starters, but the roster still features plenty of talent. Speedster Jacob Lopez and deep-ball threat Alexander Asberry headline an impressive receiving corps, and the duo will see plenty of targets after having strong performances throughout the past season. Senior standout Levante Boyd will also build off of a solid 2017 campaign, and he will be heavily involved on both sides of the ball as an offensive lineman, defensive lineman, and tight end.
