Mt. Carmel Sundevils 13, La Costa Canyon Mavericks 9

The Prep Pigskin Report was at it again on Friday, as the best High School Football Highlight Show made it out to every game in the County to bring you the best highlights anywhere.

In a game that on paper looked like it would be an offensive shootout, turned into a defensive battle between the La Costa Canyon Mavericks and Mt. Carmel Sundevils. La Costa Canyon came into the game fresh off a 30 point outburst over La Serna last week, while Mt. Carmel exploded for 34 points as they blanked Otay Ranch.

The scoring got started in the first quarter when Mt. Carmel’s Senior Quarterback, Dylan Hunt called his own number and ran it 13 yards up the right sideline. As he reached the goal, he was tackled and fumbled the ball into the end zone. Fortunately for the Sundevils, Andrew Mataafa was there to fall on it and score the TD for Mt. Carmel. Dylan Hunt was hurt on the play and did not return to the game.

The second quarter saw La Costa Canyon get on the scoreboard with a field goal. That’s how the first half would end with Mt. Carmel leading 7-3. Definitely not the high scoring affair most people anticipated.

In the third quarter, both teams would find the end zone. First up was LCC who executed a scoring drive that finished with Maverick Junior QB Jake Neufeld scoring on a one yard run up the middle. That made the score 9-7 LCC.

Mt. Carmel would answer though. Sundevils QB Sean Casey replacing the injured Hunt, would play pitch and catch with TJ Sullivan from 36 yards out to put Mt. Carmel up for good 13-9.

From there the Sundevil defense would take over. Senior Chiemeka Ochi would get three of Mt. Carmel’s five sacks on the game. Junior Corner Back Mark Johnson would do his part coming up with two interceptions in the game, including one that killed any come back attempt by LCC as it came with under three minutes left in the game.

PREVIEW

Week two of the High School Football Season is coming this Friday and Prep Pigskin Report will once again be covering every game to bring you the best highlights anywhere.

Two teams with wins last week will be facing, off when the La Costa Canyon Mavericks travel to Mt. Carmel to take on the Sundevils. The Mavericks beat La Serna High School 30-21, while Mt. Carmel blanked Otay Ranch 34-0 last Friday.

Mt. Carmel’s Senior QB Dylan Hunt has picked up right where the graduated Lucas Johnson left off. Hunt ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more in last Friday’s win over Otay Ranch. He amassed 202 yards in the air and ran for an additional 56 yards on the ground.

La Costa Canyon has a talented Quarterback of their own in the form of Jake Neufeld. The Maverick signal caller led a 4th quarter comeback against a game La Serna team. Neufeld threw for two touchdown passes. He also ran for another TD, early in the 4th quarter that sparked La Costa Canyon to 16 unanswered points and sealed the victory for the Mavericks.

Look for Friday’s match-up to be a high scoring affair with both teams putting up big offensive numbers. Be sure to tune into KUSI at 10:30 PM to catch the highlights of this game and every game played Friday night on the Prep Pigskin Report.
