El Camino 9, La Costa Canyon 5

The El Camino Wildcats had something to prove Friday night as they faced La Costa Canyon at the Mavericks’ homecoming game. They had to prove that their 4-1 start wasn’t a fluke; and that’s exactly what they did.

It was a sack happy game with both sides getting into the action more than six times. With the tight defense, it was just 3-0 at halftime, the field goal coming for the Wildcats.

A field goal and safety later, LCC had a cozy 5-3 lead midway into the 4th quarter. The Mavericks were on El Camino’s 12 yard line looking to put the game away when the upset party began. LCC running back DJ Sy made it all the way to the 1 yard line when safety CJ Simmons stripped the football and ran it all the way back 99 yards for the score. The 2 point conversion was no good.

El Camino improves to 5-1, 1-0, while La Costa Canyon falls to 4-2, 0-1. This win for the Wildcats proves that they’re the real deal this year and makes the game against Oceanside on November 7 that much more interesting.

Correction: The sack recorded by LCC in the highlights was by Tommy Carey, not Gavin Hill. The author regrets the error.
