La Jolla Country Day Torreys 62, Mar Vista Mariners 33
The La Jolla Country Day Torreys traveled just down south of the I-5 freeway to visit the Mar Vista Mariners. Both teams looking to survive and advance but there could only be one. The Mar Vista Mariners fell short with a final score of 62-33, La Jolla Country Day with the win.
First half was a great battle of offenses. Mar Vista’s defense came out strong and forced a hold on the Torrey offense. Mariner’s first possession resulted in a 6-yd touchdown run from Khalil Spruill. Spruill had a total of three touchdowns in the first half including a 60-yd touchdown run. Also in the first half included a pass from Braxton Burmeister to Jaden Dir for a 50-yd touchdown.
At halftime, the score was 28-20 LJCD with the lead. After what seemed to be a well fought battle in the first half, the Torreys came out fired up and led the rest of the game. LJCD opened their first drive of the second half with consecutive runs by Silver Pigskin finalist Burmeister, which led to a handoff to Caleb Petry for a 22-yd touchdown, 34-20 LJCD.
Late in the third quarter, Burmeister would seal the deal and extend the Torrey lead even further with a 2-yd rushing touchdown making the score 42-20 after the extra point.
La Jolla Country survives and advances for another week. Next week they compete against #1 seeded Southwest El Centro (9-2) for the Semi Finals. From there, the winner of this matchup would get the opportunity to play the winner of the Santana versus Monte Vista game for the Division IV Championship.
PREVIEW: This week in the Division IV Quarter Finals, #5 La Jolla Country Day Torreys head down south to compete against the #4 Mar Vista Mariners. After the strong game Torreys had last week, they face a well-rested Mariners team, which includes well-known running back Khalil Spruill.
Last week, Silver Pigskin finalist Braxton Burmeister continued to carry and lead his team. In just the first half, Burmeister put up outstanding numbers including 299 total yards and six touchdowns. If you haven’t been keeping up with Burmeister and his success this season, a total of 59 touchdowns should hint it out! In addition, Burmeister’s receiving trio of Casey Mariucci, Jaden Dir, and Brennan Goring are sure to play a big factor in this week’s match up.
Just like the Torreys, the Mariners are a dynamic offensive team but specializing in the running game. Mar Vista’s top running back includes Khalil Spruill who had five touchdowns in their last regular season game against the Chula Vista Spartans. With a bye last week, Spruill is now well rested and the Mariners defense had extra preparation to contain Burmeister and his passing game.
Another week of playoffs means another battle on the field. This week’s battle consists of a dominating passing offense versus a powerful running offense. Defense wins games and that is what both teams will have to do in order to make big stops.
Kickoff is set at 7:00 pm at Mar Vista High School. Tune in to the Prep Pigskin Report at 10:30 pm to see who will advance to the Division IV Semi Finals.
