Hilltop Lancers 24, La Jolla Vikings 14

The transfers are coming.  It was a battle of the transfer quarterbacks at the Hilltop versus La Jolla game Friday night under Sweetwater’s lights. Trevor Scully of La Jolla versus Daniel McPherson of Hilltop. Both quarterbacks, who are senior transfers from Mission Bay and Chula Vista, gave it their all Friday night as they made their debuts, but McPherren and the Lancers were able to take the week one victory from Scully and the Vikings.

First quarter, Jeremiah Rivera claimed the first TD of the game and season for the Lancers with an 8 yard run, making the score 7-0 Hilltop. Moments later, Hilltop went on to score again, rounding the score 14-0. La Jolla kept up the fight starting through the second quarter with quarterback Trevor Scully passing to Gabe Solis for a solid clean 16 yard touchdown pass, with Hilltop still up 14-7. In the third quarter with just 2 seconds left, Trevor Scully took it on himself for a quarterback keeper for a 10-yard touchdown, tying the game 14-14 even. Entering the fourth and final quarter, Hilltop was eager to have another win against La Jolla, continuing to widen the scoreboard gap with a 27-yard field goal, making it 17-14 Hilltop. To seal the victory, Daniel McPherren threw the spiral to Jeremiah Rivera yet again, pin-balling his way through the Vikings defense to make his way to the end zone for a 44-yard touchdown run.

Final score of the game, 24-14, with Hilltop continuing their winning streak against La Jolla as well as starting off the 2017 season with a record (1-0). Make sure to tune in next week as Hilltop goes against Eastlake and La Jolla battle La Jolla Country Day.

It’s that time of year again high school football fans. Get ready to set your DVRs or watch live this Friday as the Prep Pigskin Report kicks off its 19th season, with one of the 26 games that will be covered featuring the La Jolla Vikings heading down to the South Bay to battle against the Hilltop Lancers for a week 1 win.
The pairing is nothing new to both City and South Bay fans. Last season, La Jolla came up short of a W against Hilltop, with the final score being 24-21. Both teams ended their seasons respectfully with a 7-5 overall standing.
La Jolla is starting off this season with some fresh starts, including quarterback and head coach positions. Trevor Scully, former Mission Bay quarterback transfers to La Jolla to finish his senior season as a Viking. Tyler Roach, who had a short coaching stint at LJCD returns to La Jolla as the new head coach. Roach was the Offensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach for three years, even leading the most prolific offense in school history back in 2014 and his offense broke San Diego section records in the same year.
Hilltop is following the same trend, with Chula Vista Spartans senior transfer Daniel McPherren hoping to lead his team to Division and CIF titles after Hilltop reached a quarterfinal spot last season. Although he is new to the program, he is not new to his fellow teammates as a friend and former competition.
Friday’s game will not only test the transfer quarterbacks abilities to adapt to new offenses under pressure, but the ability to lead their team out on top. Who will come out of the gates strong with a week one victory?
