Lincoln Hornets 66, Sweetwater Red Devils

The Lincoln Hornets (3-1) swarmed into Sweetwater (0-3)  and shutout the Red Devils 66-0.

From the opening kickoff it was all Lincoln as Da’jon Thomas returned the kick 85 yards for a touchdown. Thomas would score later in the first quarter on what should get consideration for Play of the Week as special teams blocking opened up lanes for a stellar 66-yard punt return. The senior completed the trifecta with a 22-yard touchdown run later in the first half.

Hornet Quarterback Asante Hartzog, who throws one of the prettiest balls in the County, also had three touchdowns passing for two and rushing for one. Receivers Jailen Bailey and Xavier Tate caught the touchdown passes. Bailey also added a 45-yard rushing touchdown on the last play of the first half.

Lincoln dominated in all three phases of the game and defense was no exception as they allowed Sweetwater to gain their first- first down with 1:30 remaining in the first half. Jhaelon Brazile and Marquese Allen-Patmon led the defensive attack flying around the field and making plays.

Lincoln gets a big test Week 4 as they play powerhouse Dorsey from Los Angeles, and Sweetwater will travel to El Cajon Valley.

The Lincoln Hornets (2-1) look to change lanes and move past their crushing loss to Point Loma in Week 3, 36-34, and take their frustration out at Sweetwater (0-2).

That’s not good news for the Red Devils as the Hornets have averaged 46 points per game, second in Division II behind Christian. It makes it difficult to game plan against the explosive offense because of their speed and balance.

Quarterback Asante Hartzog can sling it throwing for 812 passing yards and nine touchdowns, adding two on the ground, through three games. His favorite target is Jailen Bailey who has 13 receptions for 357 yards and four touchdowns. Hartzog is surrounded by talent as Kevin Banks is just as good with eight receptions for 224 receiving yards and a touchdown. The senior connection of Hartzog to Bailey and Banks has combined for more than half of the team’s receptions (21 of 40) and receiving yards (581 of 909) averaging just under 200 yards in the air per game. The experience has helped the Hornet offense as Senior Running Back Kenyon Sims has carried the ball 47 times for 358 yards and 5 touchdowns averaging 119 yards on the ground.

Did I mention that none of that is good news for Sweetwater especially when considering they’ve given up 96 points and only scored a dozen in two weeks. There’s a point in a young man’s life where he has to play outside of himself and put it all on the line. It will take a team effort from the Red Devil’s to slow down the attack of Lincoln and pull out the win.
