Chula Vista Spartans 7, Mar Vista Mariners 0
It is going to be a packed house at Joseph Rindone Stadium as the Chula Vista Spartans (2-5) host the Mar Vista Mariners (5-2) on Homecoming night.
Week 9 also marks the beginning of league play for the Metro South Bay which was conquered by the Mariners in 2016 (Hilltop, 2017).
Both programs have split the last two games played against each other. Chula Vista scheduled Mar Vista in 2016 for Homecoming and didn’t have the outcome they were hoping for losing, 40-12. Running back Khalil Spruill rushed for 213 yards and five touchdowns that night.
The Mariners are rolling of late winning their last five-out-of-six games played. In games won, they have allowed on average just under a touchdown a game.
Diego Garza leads the team with 45 tackles, and safety Hasan Spruill is second on the team in tackles (41) and interceptions (2).
Spruill is an impact player on both sides of the ball. The senior has 53 carries for 560 yards and seven touchdowns. Hasan, younger brother of Khalil, has another rare opportunity to spoil Homecoming night at Chula Vista like his brother did two seasons ago.
The Mariners ground game averages a respectable 191 yards per game. Majority of the work comes from Spruill and Jacob Galeana who leads the team with 570 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns on 61 carries.
As much as this week is about the start of league play, playoff seedings hang in the balance between the two Division IV programs.
Mar Vista is considered a top-four team in Division IV which would give them a bye week in the opening round of playoffs.
Chula Vista is in the bottom half of their division and will improve their resume come playoffs if they can pull out the win.
Coming off a bye week, second-year head coach Howard Bannister and the Spartans have had two weeks to get healthy and put together a game plan against the Mariners.
Chula Vista’s five-game losing streak will be a thing of the past if they can get started on the right foot and open league play with a win.
