Monte Vista Monarchs 44, Mar Vista Mariners 0
The Monte Vista Monarchs, looking to get back to the championship to defend their title, got their season off on the right foot when the defeated the Mar Vista Mariners 44-0.
The Monarchs immediately jumped in front thanks to a poor punt from the Mariners that put them on the Mar Vista 29. Jahmon Mcclendon would proceed to pound the ball into the endzone for a 10-yard touchdown, his first of the season.
Mar Vista’s next possession didn’t end so well as Monte Vista defenders Isiah Gardner and Logan Schmidt pounced on the Mariners running back in the endzone for a safety.
The Monte Vista defense would continue to cash in on scoring opportunities as two interceptions by Gardner and Darren Barkins would be brought back where they came from for touchdowns.
Mcclendon would plow his way through more defenders to score his second touchdown of the game as well in the first quarter, as the Monarchs would put up thirty points in the first quarter alone.
The second quarter also saw Monte Vista score first as Elshadai Levi steamrolled through defenders and stumble into the endzone for a hard-fought touchdown.
Mar Vista was valiant in their attempts to break through on offense and put points on the board, but the Monte Vista defensive line was just too dominating and were hurrying quarterback Alexander Gutierrez seemingly every play while stomping out running plays like their lives depended on it.
By halftime, the Monarchs had put the game on cruise control and pulled most of their starters, putting in the second and third string players.
However, this didn’t stop Terrel Kyle from turning on the boosters and busting a 68-yard run. This run would lead to yet another Monte Vista touchdown, and the score would remain 44-0 all the way to the end of the game.
Monte Vista will look to continue to assert their dominance at home against University City, while Mar Vista will return to friendly grounds as they welcome Castle Park to their field.

One such game is the home opener of the Monte Vista Monarchs, as the Division IV champions look to defend their title and start their season right against the Mar Vista Mariners. Mar Vista will be looking to get some payback against Monte Vista, as the Monarchs defeated them 28-21 on the Mariner’s home turf to open the 2017 season.
After blowing past San Diego 71-48 in last year’s championship match, head coach Ron Hamamoto is ready to lead his team back to the championship and defend their title. Senior running back Jahmon Mcclendon will be a huge part of the team’s offense, as the San Diego State-bound back made mincemeat out of opposing defenses by running for 2,492 yards and scoring 40 touchdowns. Senior Kenny Stevens will take command at quarterback after spending last year catching passes as a receiver, while an offensive line headed by seniors Gerardo Arellano and Christian Dela Cruz will do their best to clear a path for Mcclendon to run free.
The Mariners finished last season on a four-game losing streak, which included a 28-0 loss to the La Jolla Vikings in a playoff match. Coach Tyler Arciaga will roll with a three-headed running attack led by Hasan Spruill, Jacob Galeana, and Tasi Sablan. With the departure of quarterback Jacob Beck, senior Alex Gutierrez will be handed the keys to the starting job and be given the task of managing an offense that scored 209 points last season. Defensive end Demetrius Smith will look to continue his strong 2017 season that saw him collect 9.5 sacks and 49 tackles.
