Sweetwater 24, Mar Vista 13

The Sweetwater Red Devils (9-0, 2-0) extend the county’s longest current winning streak to 17 after beating the Mar Vista Mariners on Senior Night 24-13.

The Red Devils started the scoring in the second quarter with a 25-yard field goal off the foot of Oscar Gutierrez.

The Mariners (5-4, 0-2) responded with a 14-play, 77-yard drive that was capped off by a Khalil Spruill 2-yard touchdown. The sophomore running back had 10 carries for 71 yards in the first half, but was slowed in the second half by Sweetwater controlling clock the rest of the game.

The Red Devils struck back quickly on the following drive on what played out to be the momentum shift in the game as RB Raven Middleton took a pitch 81 yards for a touchdown. The vision displayed on the run was of a Hawk cutting back and finding nothing but green in between him and the end zone.

Head Coach Brian Hay and the Red Devils took an 11-7 lead into the half and opened up the second half with an 8-minute drive for a touchdown. Cecilio Portillo scored his first of two touchdowns in the second half from 1 yard out and then 5 yards on his second.

Mar Vista will finish their regular season at Hilltop.

Sweetwater will take their 17-game winning streak to play Mater Dei for the Metro-South Bay League title.
