Mater Dei Crusaders 52, San Ysidro Cougars 0

Crusaders and Cougars entered the area this week, but sword proved greater than flesh as Mater Dei Catholic mauled San Ysidro 52-0 after scoring five touchdowns in the first quarter. The Crusaders moved to 4-1 on the year while San Ysidro dropped to 0-5.

After a three and out on the Cougars first possession, the Crusaders returned it for touchdown. Then after another stop by the defense, Mater Dei junior quarterback Chris Jones found Kyle Moses who breaks a tackle, turns on the jets and is in for an 85-yard touchdown play to make it 14-0 early.

San Ysidro quarterback Franklin Forbes had a rough day, getting picked off several times including late in the first quarter that lead to another Crusader touchdown. Jones next found Eli Shelton who zipped past the defenders untouched en route to a 45-yard touchdown.

This game was over early and a running clock was used for the entire second half. The Crusaders will host 3-1 Bishops who took down Hilltop this week while, the San Ysidro Cougars will look for their first win against a team from their neighbor across the border.

The Mater Dei Crusaders (3-0) travel to San Ysidro to face off against the (0-3) Cougars in a match-up between two teams headed in polar opposite directions. San Ysidro is coming off its worst loss in seven years after getting trounced 59-0 on the road against University City and Mater Dei is riding a hot streak after winning its third straight game with a convincing 49-27 victory against Parker High School.

Not much has gone right for the Cougars this season and they will have their hands full trying to slow down the indomitable Crusader running back C.J. Verdell. Verdell’s offensive output this year have been Madden-cheat-code good, after three games this season he has amassed 421 rushing yards averaging 10.78 yards every time he touches the ball. On defense they are anchored by tackle machines Jovan Bayless and Robert Duran. The only under performing facet of the Crusaders’ team has been their lackluster passing game averaging a meager 174 passing yards a game. Even though the air game has’t provided a spark this season, the Crusader have avoided turnovers by not recording a single interception thus far.

The game is at 7:00 PM at San Ysidro High School. Catch the highlights on the PPR at 10:30 only on KUSI!
