Mission Hills Grizzlies 56, Mater Dei Crusaders 7
Friday night the Mater Dei Crusaders faced the Mission Hills Grizzlies at Mission Hills High School. Despite beating the Grizzlies in a massive upset last season, the Crusaders were anything but victorious in their pre-season match up against the Grizzlies. With a 5 star offense initially keeping their momentum slow yet steady, Mission Hills walked away from the Friday night-lights with an impressive 56-7 victory.
With the 1st quarter hinting towards a fairly matched game, Mission Hills took time in the beginning to assess their opponent’s strengths and weaknesses. In the 1st quarter Jack Tuttle (QB) assisted Maurice Jones (CB/WR) and Sam Dixon (RB/LB) with solid running plays. With the clock running out of time, Tuttle buckled down with a 16yd touchdown pass to teammate Damon Wigand, 7-0 Grizzlies. With a little less then 2 minutes left in the 1st, Mater Dei’s sophomore stud, Aiden Calvert makes a 99yd kick return touchdown. Calvert’s extraordinary touchdown gave Mater Dei fans hope for a much closer game. With a play like that, we expect to see more magic from Calvert throughout the season.
With the score tied up at the beginning of the 2nd quarter, the crowd began to question what kind of game this would become. But in true, grizzly and tenacious fashion Sam Dixon makes not 1, but 2 touchdown runs. Jack Tuttle finally catches the touchdown bug and in between Dixon’s plays and goes for a 39yd touchdown pass to Chris Olave (WR/CB). The Grizzlies wrap up the first half of the game 28-7.
In the second half of the Crusaders vs. Grizzlies game, Damon Wigand (RB), Alan Arellano (RB) and Nathan Barraza (FS) bring home the last 4 touchdowns of the game. Wigand brings home 2 touchdown runs. Arellano keeps the touchdown streak going strong with a 19yd touchdown, and Barraza cherry tops the streak with a 3yd-rushing touchdown. Mission Hills leaves their field with a 56-7 victory over Mater Dei Catholic. The Grizzlies are now 3-0 while the Crusaders are 1-2.

PREVIEW: This week high school football presents a North vs. South County non-conference game. The Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders (1-1) will face the Mission Hills Grizzlies (2-0) at Mission Hills High School.
The Grizzlies have been relentless and hard-hitting on the field. Last week they defeated the Desert Hills Thunder 42-7 with Desert Hills barely making their touchdown in the 4th quarter. Power players and seasoned athletes, Jack Tuttle (QB), Chris Olave (WR/CB), Sam Dixon (RB/LB), Maurice Jones (CB/WR) and Damon Wigand (RB) worked in perfect harmony and we predict that this senior squad will carry their team into a 3-peat pre-season victory. The Grizzlies are coached under Chris Hauser who enters his 13th season with the team. Hauser was the first and only head coach to join the football program. His time and success with Mission Hills High School is a true testament to his coaching capabilities.
The North County’s opponents, Mater Dei Catholic out of Chula Vista will walk into their third week of football pre-season 1-1. Head coach John Joyner has led the Crusaders since 2009 and enters his 8th season with the team. In 2015 he led the program to a 14-1 overall record and their very first state championship. Mater Dei Catholic is the Alma Mater of 2016 Silver Pigskin recipient and the University of Oregon’s current running back, CJ Verdell and star quarterback, Chris Jones.
Last year the Crusaders took home a 41-14 win against the Grizzlies in Chick-Fil-A ‘s Game of the Week (also known as the "Upset of the Week"). But only under the Friday night-lights will we know who comes out on top. The Grizzlies will face the Crusaders at Mission Hills High School Friday at 7pm.
