Mira Mesa Marauders 3, Cathedral Catholic Dons 41
Closing out the regular season, we were at Cathedral Catholic to watch the Dons take on the Mira Mesa Marauders. The end result matched our expectations but the actual game was a different story.
Mira Mesa had a three and out on their first drive to start out the game. After the Dons muffed the punt return, the Marauders recovered in prime position, but were stuffed once again.
The Dons struck first with a 3 yard touchdown run by Adam Eastwood. The point after was no good, Cathedral led 6-0.
Later in the second, Marauders’ Steffon McKnight intercepted Cathedral on what would have been the longest play of the game. This was the brightest sport for Mira Mesa on the night.
Going into halftime, the Dons led 13-3 after a Tyson Maeva 5 yard TD run. Up to this point, there were many questionable penalties that were called and ones that should have been called. The Dons were coming out vicious and ready to put up a fight.
Cathedral began to pull away in the second half, scoring on three more touchdown runs and a 34 yard RD pass from Tate Haynes to JeVon Figaro.
The final score in this one was 41-3, Dons rolling over the Marauders. Both teams are ending their season at 6-4, but Cathedral has the momentum going into playoffs.
PREVIEW: This Friday takes us out to Cathedral Catholic High School where the Dons will be facing fellow members of the Eastern League, the Mira Mesa Marauders. Cathedral is 5-4 on the season and ranked sixth in the CIF Division 1 power rankings, Mira Mesa is 6-3 and holds the seventh spot in the Division 2 rankings. The last time these two teams battled it out on Halloween of last season, Cathedral won 35-3.
Last week the Dons faced Lincoln and shut them out 21-0, though the score is not telling of how the game played out. The Hornets gave Cathedral some tough competition and threatened to hand the Dons their fifth loss of the season. But behind the running effort of Hogan Irwin, who had 117 yards and a TD, and the defense registering several turnovers, the Dons came out on top. Cathedral has one player on the Silver Pigskin watch list and it’s MLB/FB Tyson Maeva.
Mira Mesa had a different story last Friday. They were on the opposite end of another shutout, this time losing to St. Augustine by a score of 49-0. Prior to this game the Marauders had been enjoying much success on the field, only other losses coming to #12 El Camino and Huntington Beach’s Fountain Valley. Mira Mesa is 1-1 in league and is looking to end their season with a W against their league opponents.
Will the Marauders bounce back from last week’s performance or will the Dons come out on top? Watch the Prep Pigskin Report on KUSI every Friday night at 10:30pm to see highlights from this game and all others around San Diego County.
