Nelson Photo Pigskin Idol Game of the Week: University City Centurions 27, Monte Vista Monarchs 15

The Nelson Photo Pigskin Idol Game of the Week had the University City Centurions hosting the Monte Vista Monarchs.  Both teams with a record of 1-0 looking to remain perfect.

The Centurions hosting a red, white, and blue night to show off their patriotic side, but the theme wasn’t the only thing they showed off.  Right off the bat, Marcel Patterson displayed his running game with an 88-yard kickoff return.  The return would be one of his three touchdowns of the night.

Also on offense, Gunnar Gray showed off his cannon of an arm with a 30-yard bomb to Tiago Quantz putting up the Centurions 13-0 in the first quarter.  Not only did the offense show off their weapons, defense had quite the night as well.  The Monte Vista Monarchs had three interceptions before getting on the board.  Casey Granfors, Tariq Jefferson, and Jake Jones were just a few to hold the Monarchs from unanswered points.

Though the first half was all UC, the Monarchs came out strong in the second half with a weapon of their own, Jahmon McClendon.  McClendon goes 55 yards on the ground to help put his offense in scoring position where they will then get their first points on the board.  End of the third quarter, it was McClendon again making the score within six points.

But it was UC’s Patterson who puts the game away in the fourth quarter with a 52-yard touchdown run.

The Centurions’ game plan has them sitting at 2-0 as they head to Scripps Ranch (0-2) for Week 3.  The Monte Vista Monarchs looking to show their home crowd they can improve their record when they welcome the Patrick Henry Patriots (0-2).

PREVIEW: Week Two brings our Pigskin Idol to University City as the Centurions host the Monte Vista Monarchs at 6:30pm.  Both teams are coming off a win from week one and look to continue their perfect record.

The University City Centurions had a strong game against Sweetwater on offense and defense.  The Centurions recorded two interceptions by Tiago Quantz and Tariq Jefferson.  In addition, Casey Granfors recovered a fumble and blocked a field goal attempt.  On offense, the Centurions Sophomore Quarterback Gunnar Gray completed half his passes for a total of 178 yards plus two passing touchdowns.  E’lonie Rico was last week’s star with 24 carries and 199 yards.

In Monte Vista’s win against Mar Vista, McClendon was the answer to their prayer.  McClendon found ways to remain open throughout the game, but the play to break the tie right before the third quarter ended was his 74-yard touchdown.  With Centurions’ Gray as quarterback, the Monarchs will be looking to their defensive star, Black Schmidt, to lead his defense and create better opportunities like the Mar Vista punt he blocked which gave the offense prime field position.

Both teams have stars on both sides of the ball, but who will give a team their first loss of the season?  Head to University City to catch the Pigskin Idol Game of the Week to find out and watch our Pigskin Idol read the highlights on the Prep Pigskin Report at 10:30pm on KUSI.
