Escondido Cycle Center North County GOTW: St. Augustine Saints 28, Carlsbad Lancers 7

Escondido Cycle Center North County Game of the week Recap:

If there is a better High School football team in San Diego then St. Augustine, please stand up.  The top ranked Saints men went on the road beating Carlsbad at Swede Krcmar Field 28-7 in the Escondido Cycle Center North County Game of the Week.

Richard Sanchez’ may have the most talented team in the San Diego County, but just because you have talent, doesn’t mean you know how to use it, and Coach Sanchez knows how to use his talent.  It all starts with quarterback Rodney Thompson.  Backed up deep in their own end zone, Thompson evaded what looked to be a safety, and threw a dart to Junior Wide receiver JR Justice the son of former Major League Baseball player David Justice and he did the rest going 96 yards for the 1st score of the game.

Saints safety Tariq Thompson then Picked off a Pass and returned it for a score only to watch it get wiped out by a yellow hanky.  Two plays later Thompson was on the receiving end from a touchdown pass from Rodney Thompson (No relation).

St. Augustine added another score with a 63 Touchdown run by Junior Isaac Taylor, (Who is a four star corner being recruited by every major university in the nation).

Carlsbad pulled to within 2 touchdowns in the 3rd quarter, but the Saints Darrell Broussard busted off an eighty yard run to seal this one.

Next week St. Augustine and their 2-0 mark will travel to LA Loyola while Carlsbad will host Imperial Valley High School.

Preview:

Can the Carlsbad Lancers top the #1 team in San Diego County? That will be answered in the "Escondido Cycle Center" North County Game of the Week.

This week see the St. Augustine Saints ranked #1 in San Diego County by The PPR, The Union Tribune, and Maxpreps.com.  Why not? They are coming off of a 49 point win in week one against Ramona.  While Carlsbad blanked Del Norte on the road in their 1st game of 2016.

This may be the most talent St. Augustine has had in the last 20 years, their offensive line averages 275 pounds across the board. And those "Hogs" will be blocking for Rodney Thompson who is coming off an 8-for-11 performance for 175 yards and a TD.  Add to that their running backs senior Darrell Broussard who is spelled by Isaac Taylor and you are in for a long day on defense. But wait there is more…their defense is one of the best in the county as well. You start with 2 of the best defensive backs in not just in San Diego but Southern California in Junior Tariq Thompson and Isaac Taylor. And you have Ike Taylor coming off the end who is impressive on film as well as 300 pound nose tackle Johnathan Lewis and lets just say the "Saints are coming!"

Carlsbad is coming off a season where they lost to Cathedral Catholic ion the road in the Open Division Playoffs 24-21. And 18 of those 22 starters have graduated. This team is young but they are talented. Junior quarterback Isaiah Ramos is accurate in the pocket, but you can expect Lancers head coach Thadd MacNeal to control the clock and run the ball with Junior Raphael Cooper and Senior Jesse Atiga.  While young Carlsbad is also solid on defense, racking up 7 sacks, four of the seven coming from seniors Michael Curaenta with two, and Jason Siaosi with two as well.

Should be an good game early, but the Saints may just have too much talent for Carlsbad to keep up with.

#RicksPick St. Augustine 45 Carlsbad 31
